Student’s Day

Each day looks different at the Chicken Coop.  In addition to the two co-teachers, students get a chance to have other teachers throughout the week for farm, art, and P.E. classes.

Time Subject Sample Content
8:30-8:50 Morning Meeting Our morning meeting consists of a movement, a grounding, the weather, sharing nature notes, and hearing what the day will hold.
9:00-9:40 Reader’s Workshop or Social Studies The children study literature with Wendy or Social Studies with Miranda. In literature, they might be carefully considering a book such as Roll of Thunder, Hear my Cry or a more contemporary novel. such as Before the Ever After.  In Social Studies, they might be making a board game that depicts the path a bill takes in becoming a law, or analyzing the role of Gandhi in the thinking of Martin Luther King.
9:40-10:00 Snack and Break In most all weather, the students have their breaks outside. They might climb trees, visit the chickens, or chase each other through the snow.

 Writer’s Workshop and Math Grade Groups Our small group size allows the teachers to effectively meet individual learning needs. Children are enabled to advance, but they are also encouraged to take their time and really learn the material well.
11:30-12:30 Lunch and Recess The kids eat lunch together in the classroom or outside. Lunch is always lively. After they finish eating, the kids play outside.
12:30-1:00 Quiet Reading The children read any book that is interesting to them. The teacher confers with them about their reading and their selection of books
1:15-2:00 Farm Life The farmer teachers at the Farm School share their knowledge of farming throughout the seasons with the Chicken Coop students.  They might participate in seeding, washing crops, or building projects – to name a few.
2:15-2:45 Social Studies Students might read and discuss a recent news article, or write interview questions for a family member about an event they lived through.
3:00-3:20 Homework and Jobs then Dismissal We review any homework for the night, then the students maintain their own office spaces and the shared spaces on the farm and in the classroom.  We share gratitudes, shake hands, and go home for the day.
