FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the youth separated out based on age/grade? In most cases youth are not separated out by age or grade range. However, because we will need to place youth in cohorts based on where they sleep (by bunkside /tent) we are open to placing youth in bunkside/tent cohorts based on age/grade if there is a significant disparity in age ranges for youth signed up for the session. We will reach out to you with any proposed adjustments if necessary as registrations come in.

How many youth attend each session? We have a maximum of 24 youth for each two week long session.

What is the counselor/camper ratio? Currently recommendations call for a ratio of 1 counselor to 10/12 youth. We anticipate a ratio of 24 youth to a minimum of 8 or more counselors. We will know the final number of counselors once state recommendations around other aspects of our programs operations become released.

What are the indoor sleeping arrangements for this session? We have 2 separate indoor bunk sides (east side bunks and the west side bunks). These 2 separate bunk sides usually hold 20 sleeping spaces each but for social distancing measures we are planning for a maximum of 8 sleeping spaces per bunk side. Youth will sleep in bed spaces that are organized foot to foot to allow a minimum 6ft distance between head spaces in all directions. Each individual bed space will be equipped with curtains to create a personal tent like barrier while sleeping

Are the outdoor sleeping spaces cabins or tents? Our outdoor sleeping tents have wooden frames and a wooden platform, a canvas covered with windows and equipped with lightning rods. Each outdoor tent has wooden twin sized beds built in and will hold a maximum of 4 youth for social distancing purposes and foot to foot sleeping to allow a minimum 6ft between head spaces in all directions. Each individual bed space will be equipped with curtains to create a personal tent like barrier while sleeping.

How are Indoor Bunk Spaces and Outdoor tents assigned? You can select your preference for an indoor bunk space or outdoor tents when you register.

What are the activities throughout the day? Each summer, The Farm School provides children with an opportunity to be on the farm outside of a school visit. During the extended summer sessions, children have the time to get to experience The Farm School on a more personal level. The programs are shepherded by our experienced staff of farmers and teachers. For children who have attended during the school year, we will be doing much the same as you remember – chores, work projects, crafts, tracking. For all of you, new and returning, here are some of the things you can look forward to: milking cows, gardening, picking strawberries, raspberries, building, hiking, caring for animals, working in the woods, haying, star gazing, shooting hoops, sawing timber, throwing frisbees and enjoying the summer breezes with new and old friends.

What are the meals like? Is there a dining hall? Our meals are amazing; farm fresh meat, veggies, eggs and fruits are utilized and we take care to honor allergies and dietary restrictions. It is our aim to have all meals outside under a huge and beautiful tent and throughout the gardens of the farm. In cases of inclement weather we will have staggered meals indoors and by sleeping space cohort. We are waiting for additional state guidelines to be released and will follow them closely. Please feel free to contact the nourishment team at kitchen@farmschool.org if you have any specific questions.
